ABOUT US
Founded early 2009, GMG Materials was established with a clear objective - to supply European industrial raw materials & feedstock to OEMs and manufacturers on mainland China.
At the time, ability to trade Renminbi freely within Hong Kong SAR, combined with mainland China clients' strong preference for RMB denominated transactions — made Hong Kong a strategically sound base of operations.
The company's initial focus was on shipping/rehoming RCF (fibre), secondary polymer and recovered but pre-sorted polymer feedstock — all containerised for deep-sea delivery into China mainland ports.
Exports of these materials were tightly regulated under China's AQSIQ licensing regime and GMG met compliance requirements through its subsidiary companies in the UK and EU enabling successful execution of numerous contracts to major mainland ports including Tianjin, Qingdao, Xiamen Haicang, Shanghai, Hong Kong and other South China sea ports etc.
Over the years however, market demand evolved, prompting a shift toward the commodities of Ferrous, Non-Ferrous and Weee materials with spent solvents having been subsequently added to the product portfolio.
In 2017, the introduction of China’s "Operation National Sword" (also known as "Operation Green Fence") led to a strategic pivot.
The company began developing alternative trade flows into secondary markets across Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines) and South Asia (India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka) thus broadening the company's geographic reach as also it's client base.
Fast forward to today and our trade desks are intensely focused on expanding end use client portfolios across mid cap steel mills, foundries and industrial raw material consumers throughout the South and Southeast of Asia.
A key focus is growing our export offerings of Ferrous, Non-Ferrous and Weee materials aggregated from across EU27 and the British Isles.
GMG’s competitive edge lies in its experienced procurement teams operating across the EU/UK ably supported by a mature back room function (freight/logistics/multimodal) who excel in constructing efficient end-to-end supply chains so as to deliver timely contract performance across highly competitive consumption markets.
The recent establishment and deployment of senior commercial colleagues in South Asia / India underscores our commitment to this rapidly growing market — ranked #2 (quote April 2025 World Steel output index) with 12.9 Mt behind China and ahead of Japan and the United States.
With the addition of these colleagues to the Commercial Desk teams, GMG Materials now looks to actively leverage decades of accumulated 'end use market' experience across the company's pan European (procurement) and South Asian (client interface) platforms.
